The Lead Litigation Assistant coordinates/manages the work of five Litigation Assistants, in addition to performing some litigation assistant duties. Litigation Assistants in this office support attorneys working to improve conditions of confinement for people in prison, primarily by screening and responding to correspondence from people in prison and their families. Litigation Assistants also assist with monitoring conditions at prisons by assisting with monitoring tour preparation, and by joining attorneys on occasional prison monitoring visits. The Lead Litigation Assistant works with a Supervising Attorney to ensure that the Litigation Assistants are trained, are working effectively and have a balanced workload.
This is an ideal position for an individual with one to two years of work experience as a manager/supervisor and who is interested in working in a public interest setting. This is a full-time position with preference given to candidates intending to commit two years or more to the position.
Responsibilities:
Lead-specific Duties (50%): - Assess the mail load of individual Litigation Assistants (daily) and facilitate redistribution of mail as needed. - Create the prison assignments for the Litigation Assistants. - Update office systems (Salesforce, relevant documents) accordingly. - Co-conduct hiring with Attorney Supervisor. - Coordinate and conduct training for new Litigation Assistants. - Provide logistical, organizational, and professional support for Litigation Assistants on a daily basis through check-ins and shifting workload. - Convey attorney feedback to Litigation Assistants. - Communicate Litigation Assistant availability to the attorney team. - Attend monthly case coordination meetings. Litigation Assistant Duties (50%): 1. Mail processing: - Screens incoming correspondence from people in prison and their families - Identifies opportunities for individual advocacy - Enters data into a database - Drafts outgoing correspondence and advocacy 2. Assist attorneys with a variety of responsibilities including: - Document review in preparation for monitoring visits - Interviewing clients - Data entry - Research - Occasional administrative duties, as necessary Qualifications/Requirements - BA or equivalent college degree or comparable work experience - Three to four years of full-time work experience - Strong interpersonal skills - Experience managing/supervising multiple employees - Excellent analytical, reading and writing skills - Ability to organize and efficiently process significant amounts of correspondence - High degree of attention to detail - Experience with use of Salesforce or other comparable database programs - Willingness to travel throughout California - Demonstrated interest in social justice - Bilingual in Spanish or ASL preferred To apply email a cover letter, resume and writing sample as one attachment to jobs@prisonlaw.com
